Centre agrees to Mamata's demand on NCTC

KOLKATA: Bowing once again to pressure from ally Trinamool Congress, government has agreed to discuss the National Counter Terrorism Centre issue separately with chief ministers in Delhi on May five as demanded by Mamata Banerjee.

Home Minister P Chidambaram, on instruction from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has communicated to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that agreeing to her suggestion, the NCTC issue would be discussed at a separate meeting with the chief ministers on May five, secretariat sources said here.

The Centre had earlier called a meeting of chief ministers on April 16 on internal security, in which the NCTC was listed among 10 issues on the agenda.

Now agreeing with Mamata Banerjee's suggestion to the Prime Minister made on March 30, nine issues on the agenda will be discussed on April 16, they said.

A separate discussion will be held with CMs on May 5 for discussing the NCTC, the sources said, quoting Chidambaram's communication to Banerjee.

Banerjee had earlier written to the Prime Minister pointing out that she had received a letter from the Union Home Ministry on the chief ministers' conference on April 16 where NCTC was among ten items on the agenda.

The Trinamool chief had stressed that in such a case the focus of the NCTC, which was a very sensitive issue, would be lost and had suggested it should be the only matter of discussion at the meeting so that all states could express their views properly and other issues could be discussed subsequently.

"It is not good to impose or bulldoze in a federal structure," she had said.

Banerjee had also said that at her last meeting with the PM, she had requested him not to go forward with the NCTC without consulting with and consensus among states.

AP woman forced miscarriage for bearing girl child

Guntur (AP), Apr 3 (PTI) A 23-year-old woman suffered a miscarriage after she was allegedly beaten up by her husband and in-laws after they came to know that she was going to deliver a baby girl at Tenali town in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district, police said today. The accused Al-Baksh and his parents were anticipating a male child and allegedly thrashed Sheikh Munni, who was in 8th month of her pregnancy, that led to miscarriage on March 10, they said quoting the complainant. According to the victim's parents, who lodged a complaint with Tenali III Town Police, Al-Baksh and his family members approached a tantrik in Vijayawada after Munni earlier delivered two baby girls. The tantrik reportedly advised the accused that his wife would give birth to a baby boy only on her 7th delivery. "Al-Baksh and his family members got killed the third child, a 20-day-baby girl, after giving her some tablets about four years ago while Munni had to undergo forceful abortions with regard to the fourth and fifth deliveries. Subsequently, on March 10, Al-Baksh and his parents beat up Munni with rods and bucket on her stomach that led to miscarriage (on her sixth delivery)," police said quoting the complainant. According to police, the woman was kept under house-arrest after the incident by her husband and his family members. She, however, managed to escape and was subsequently admitted in a local hospital at Mangalagiri town and her parents were informed about the matter around 10 days back, who in turn lodged a complaint. Tenali III Town Police registered a case and arrested Al-Baksh and his parents who were sent to judicial remand, while further investigations are on.
