Jagan assets case: CBI seeks permission from Andhra Pradesh government to attach his properties

Hyderabad:  In a move that is expected to further cripple YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has written to the Andhra Pradesh government, seeking permission to attach his properties.

The move comes just a week after the CBI moved to freeze the accounts of three large parts of Jagan's considerable empire - Jagathi Publications, Indira TV and Janani Infrastructure - pending an inquiry by it. The CBI believes that Jagan, one of India's richest politicians with declared assets worth 365 crores, benefited from his father's position as chief minister. YS Rajasekhara Reddy, who died while in office in 2009, allegedly asked companies to invest in Jagan's firms and in return, they were granted licences or other clearances.

The latest action by the probe agency, hence, is a double whammy of sorts as none of Jagan's properties can now be purchased or sold. He will also be unable to make any new investments.
The state government, meanwhile, will now take a decision on the CBI's request to seize his properties. Once it gives the go-ahead, the CBI will then seek permission from the court to attach his properties.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court has, in the meanwhile, suspended a government order (GO) that stopped advertisements to Sakshi TV and channel - owned by Jagan through Indira TV and Jagathi Publications respectively. The growing popularity and clout of Jagan, in the last one year, has been attributed, in a large measure, to both media houses. The YSR Congress chief, who is currently touring his home constituency of Kadapa, had earlier alleged that the CBI's move to freeze his accounts was an effort to politically stifle him ahead of the by-elections in the state.

"Does the CBI intend to close Sakshi? Why should they freeze accounts?" the 39-year-old MP from Kadapa had asked while speaking to NDTV. The YSR Congress chief had also slammed the ruling Congress and the Telugu Desam Party, who he alleged had aligned against him. His supporters too have said that that CBI's actions, smack of a political conspiracy.

Interestingly, the investigating agency's latest move comes a couple of days after it arrested Jagan's business associate and industrialist Nimmagadda Prasad in connection with an alleged disproportionate assets case.

The developments, hence, would appear to many as tightening the financial screws on Jagan and could have significant political ramifications as Andhra Pradesh gears up for by-elections to 18 assembly and one Lok Sabha seat in June. Analysts say that Jagan's party, the YSR Congress, appears to have a definite edge that has made, both the ruling Congress and the Telugu Desam Party, nervous.

The CBI has, so far, filed three chargesheets in the disproportionate assets case against Jagan. The first had named him as accused number one, alongwith 12 others, including companies owned by him. The subsequent chargesheets also named companies that are said to have benefitted when YSR was chief minister and had allegedly invested in Jagan's companies as a quid pro quo.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court had, in August last year, directed the CBI to register a case against Jagan and thoroughly inquire into his alleged financial misdeeds. The investigating agency had named booked 73 individuals and companies in the FIR against Jagan.

The Supreme Court has, in the meanwhile, sought a report on 26 government orders (GOs) issued that are said to have benefitted Jagan and these companies. The top court has asked six ministers, all from the Congress, and eight bureaucrats from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) during the YSR regime in 2009, to explain their role in the issuance of the GOs.

Arrest Jagan too, says Ramesh Rathod

Telugu Desam Party Polit Bureau member Ramesh Rathod on Wednesday demanded the arrest of YSRC Chief Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy in the wake the arrest of industrialist Nimmagadda Prasad.
He also pressed for action against ministers in the then YSR cabinet who had directly or indirectly helped the Kadapa MP amass wealth through illegal means.
“When VANPIC promoter Nimmagadda Prasad, 12th accused in the illegal assets case has been arrested why the CBI has not taken Mr Jaganmohan Reddy, the first accused, into custody,” the TDP MP asked at a press conference here.
Fearing collapse of the Congress Government, the ruling Congress was not giving a free hand to the CBI to take action against the ministers in the then YSR cabinet who were behind the issuance of 26 controversial GOs, he opined.
Plea to State
He also urged the Kiran Kumar Reddy Government to take back all the lands alienated to companies which had made quid pro quo investments in the firms floated by Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy.
Former Minister Balineni Srinivasa Reddy who was allegedly responsible for irregularities in payment of compensation to farmers would not go unpunished, felt TDP district president D. Janardhan, also party nominee for the Ongole Assembly by-election.
On the Telangana issue, Mr. Rathod said, “the ball is in the court of Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Delay on the part of the Centre and prolonged uncertainty is hurting development.”
‘Unfortunate'
It was unfortunate that both the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti were trying to corner the TDP, “which is neither in a position to give Telangana or stop it. It is Ms Gandhi who has to make up her mind,” the Adilabad MP added.

Jagan to campaign in Railway Kodur today

YSR Congress Party president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy will canvass in Railway Kodur (SC) constituency in Kadapa district on May 17 and 18.
Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy will begin his road show from Kondur in Penagalur mandal at 9 a.m. on May 17. Congress MLC C. Narayana Reddy and former MLA and YSRCP candidate for Railway Kodur Koramutla Srinivasulu told newsmen in YSRCP office at Kodur.

Prasad's arrest has sent wrong signals, says YSRCP

The YSR Congress Party has said that the arrest of industrialist Nimmagadda Prasad has sent a wrong signal to the entrepreneur community and that the industrial development would take a backseat for years to come.
Reacting to the arrest of Mr. Prasad by the CBI, the YSR Congress spokesperson Gattu Ramachandra Rao said that the former had invested in many companies and several industrialists had invested money in industries owned by him. This is a mercantile activity that generates economic activity and employment. Such arrests would only make investors think twice before they took up ventures in the State, he said.
‘Facts distorted'
At a press conference, Mr. Ramachandra Rao said Mr. Prasad has 11 per cent share in Jagathi publications and profited from the sale of his share in Bharati cements. “It's mercantile mechanism and the powers that be, along with a section of the media are trying to distort facts and publishing selective information leads to chaos and the development activity will take a back seat,” he pointed out.
The allegations that VANPIC lands were given to Mr. Prasad at throwaway prices by the YSR government stands no ground as most of the land was purchased by him on his own, he added.
He said Mr. Prasad's Matrix company's worth was Rs. 30 crore but was sold at Rs. 400 crore and a TDP leader was actively involved in the deal. “Business deals do happen and some people gain money and reap rich dividends from their investments,” Mr. Rao said.

Former Congress MLA to join YSRCP

Former Congress MLA Gunti Venkateswara Prasad, who represented Railway Kodur (SC) constituency from 2004-09, is all set to join YSR Congress Party during Kadapa MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy's tour of the constituency on Thursday.
Jagan invited
Dr. Prasad invited Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy for lunch in his house at Chitvel on May 17 after conveying his decision to join YSRCP, according to informed sources.
Efforts prove futile
The former MLA decided to quit the Congress and efforts by Rajampet MP A. Sai Prathap and Minister for Endowments C. Ramachandraiah, to ensure his continuance in the ruling party proved futile.
Denied ticket
Dr. G.V. Prasad who contended for Congress ticket for Railway Kodur, in the by-elections slated on June 12, stayed away from Congress election campaign so far as he was peeved at the party nominating Kanaparthi Easwaraiah, who unsuccessfully contested in several elections, on the recommendation of Congress MLC B. Chengalrayulu. The former MLA stayed away from Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy's recent tour of Railway Kodur segment.
