YSR Cong cries foul over CBI’s ‘selective probe’

HYDERABAD: Pointing to former CBI director Joginder Singh's comments during an interview that CBI functions at the behest of the Union home ministry and its approach varies from case to case, YSR Congress on Sunday said its stand that Jaganmohan Reddy was being targeted by the UPA at the Centre has been vindicated.

"The CBI functions as per the directives of the central government. It is clear that the TDP has conspired to join hands with the Congress, and the CBI is being used as a tool to settle political scores," party spokesperson Vasireddy Padma told reporters.

TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu's secret meeting with Union home minister P Chidambaram, and the fact that his party has a former CBI director in its ranks clearly indicate the elements of witch-hunt against Jagan, she alleged. "On one hand a former director of CBI openly admits that the agency functions as per the diktats of the Centre, and on the other, the TDP has with it another former CBI director who has been helping the party script the conspiracy case against Jagan," she alleged. The ruling and opposition parties have come together only to stop the emergence of a third force in the state, she said.

"A section of media which is against our party has also joined the conspiracy bandwagon. It has become the mouthpiece of the main conspirators.

"There have been selective leaks that were published and the CBI has never questioned the source nor issued a rejoinder," Padma alleged.

CBI serves summons on Jaganmohan Reddy

Hyderabad, May 14 — The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Monday served summons on YSR Congress leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy which was issued by a court last week seeking his appearance in an alleged illegal assets case.
A team of CBI officials met the member of parliament and served summons at his house in Yemmiganur town of Kurnool district, around 300 km from here, where he was campaigning for the next month's by-elections.
The son of late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has been directed to appear in person or through his lawyer before the principal special judge for CBI cases in Hyderabad at 10.30 a.m. on May 28 to answer charges against him.
Jagan, a legislator of Kadapa, which is more than 400 km from here, recently told a television channel that he would make a personal appearance in the court.
Summons were also issued to 11 other accused by the CBI court, which last week took cognizance of the first charge sheet filed against them on March 31.
The court has also issued summons on managing directors Srinivasa Reddy (Hetero Drugs), Nityananda Reddy (Aurobindo Pharma), Sarat Chandra Reddy (Trident life Sciences), senior IAS officer B.P. Acharya, AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation's former officer Y. Vijayalakshmi, former Company Secretary of Aurobindo Pharma Chandramouli.
IAS officer Acharya is already in judicial custody in Emaar-APIIC township case.
Representatives of Jagati Publications owned by Jagan, Hetero, Aurobindo and Trident Life Sciences have also been asked to appear in the court on May 28. Jagan's auditor Vijayasai Reddy, who was released on bail on April 30, was not issued summon as he has been attending the court proceedings regularly.
The CBI had filed second chargesheet against Jagan and others on April 23 and the third on May 7.
The federal agency had booked a case against Jagan and 72 others in August 2011 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court.
The young leader is accused of conspiring with his father and then chief minister Rajasekhara Reddy to dole out favours to companies which invested in his businesses in a quid pro quo arrangement.

CBI should bring to book Jagan, says Ramanna

Adilabad MLA (TRS) Jogu Ramanna on Sunday demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) bring to book YSR Congress party chief Jaganmohan Reddy for the alleged corrupt practices.
He justified the action being initiated against the companies managed and owned by Mr. Reddy.
At a press conference, Mr. Ramanna however, assured employees of Sakshi newspaper and TV news channel of his party standing behind them in times of crisis. He demanded that the management of Jagati Publications ensure that the employees receive their salaries promptly.

People like Jagan unfit for democratic politics'

APCC chief Botcha Satyanarayana launched a tirade against YSR Congress Party and its leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy accusing him of causing the unwanted by-elections, at a rally in Yemmiganur in Kurnool district on Sunday.
The APCC Chief said nobody wanted the election to 18 constituencies in summer when the government machinery was expected to provide succour to the drought-hit farmers and water-starved villages.
“It is unfortunate that leaders are forced to take to streets due to the selfish political games by certain leaders,” he said.
Addressing a meeting of party core workers after a rally, Mr. Satyanarayana wanted the party men to take to public the message that their MLA Y. Channakesa Reddy tried to sell the public mandate for selfish gains.
In a scathing attack on Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy, the APCC chief said impatient persons like him were unfit for democratic politics.
“He has no moral right to talk of corruption in the Congress when he raised palatial houses at three places while his peers who were also sons of former Chief Ministers had no proper houses,” he said.
He accused Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy of projecting the Congress and Sonia Gandhi programmes as those of his late father Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
In fact, the Congress programmes were fine-tuned after YSR by reducing the price of rice to Re. 1 per kg, replacing ‘pavala vaddi' with zero interest rate loans and expanding the Arogyasri programme.
He called upon party men to expose the YSR Congress and the TDP and their hallow policies saying only the Congress could render justice to all sections.
Ministers T.G. Venkatesh and E. Pratap Reddy also spoke. Mr. Pratap Reddy said mimicking his late father would not make Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy the Chief Minister of the State.
Mmember of Parliament Kotla Jayasuryaprakasa Reddy organised the rally and the public meeting.

‘YSRCP leaders planning riots'

The TDP has charged the YSR Congress Party leaders with planning riots if their president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy was arrested by the CBI.
Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mylavaram MLA and TDP district president Devineni Umamaheswara Rao said the CBI court had issued summons to Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy to appear before it on May 28.
YSRCP leaders Y.V. Subba Reddy, Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy's brother Diwakar Reddy, and Pulivendula Krishna were planning riots.
“The police and intelligence personnel are clueless. They are in deep slumber. An inquiry into the activities of the YSRCP leaders is necessary,” he said.
Referring to the hooch tragedy, Mr. Rao said he had written a letter to the Chief Minister, urging him to order a vigilance and judicial inquiry into the incident in which four people died in the One Town area, a stone's throw distance from Vijayawada (West) MLA's residence.
The Congress leaders were resorting to mudslinging regarding cheap liquor. “Though they are in power, there is no concreted effort to check the sale of cheap liquor,” he said.
Neither the Congress MLAs nor Vijayawada MP responded to the tragic incident. District Minister K. Parthasarathy and Excise and Prohibition Minister Mopidevi Venkata Ramana did not visit the bereaved families. Cheap liquor seemed to be freely available than drinking water in the city, Mr. Rao said.
