With the election code in force, statues of former Chief
Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy installed at three places in the city
have been masked.
Passersby watched with amusement
even as the departmental staff climbed up the pedestal of the bronze
statues at RDO Office junction, TUDA Circle and Thummalagunta Circle to
drape a veil over the face this evening.
This is said
to be in tune with the orders clamped by the authorities to veil
statues of political leaders and symbols that stand as an icon of any
political outfit.
The code came into effect on Wednesday and officials swung into action on Thursday.
The
‘masking' episode emerged as one of the major steps taken by the
officialdom as part of ensuring what is termed as a ‘level playing
field'.
Meanwhile, YSR Congress Party activists
expressed anguish at the officials throwing a veil over the statue of
their beloved leader, while leaving the Rajiv Gandhi statue at MCT
Circle and NTR Statue at Town Club without a cover.
